Tree data

During 2019 Caroline began to record data from five significant trees: The Original Bramley Apple Tree in Southwell, The Great Oak Tree in Sherwood Forest, Newton’s Apple Tree in Woolsthorpe, The Parliament Tree in Sherwood Forest and a Native Australian tree - The Bunya Pine in Brisbane.

Her first bell which is tuned to the frequency of The Original Bramley Apple Tree in Southwell has been cast. This large hand bell is tuned to 500Hz at 21 degrees ( the frequency of the bell changes slightly in increasing temperatures). Locke has been investigating, looking more closely at the relevance of her recorded tree data. There are obvious links to climate change and our increasing anxiety in relation to the future sustainability of our planet.

The artist has collected sound recordings of conversations with locals regarding each tree to explore ideas of significance on a personal level as well as in connection with climate change. She uses the bells as part of ceremonies which call people together to instigate change.
